About
Established in 1939, Brookside has been a staple in Marine on St. Croix for nearly a century.
Nestled in the heart of the historic village of Marine on St. Croix, Brookside Bar & Grill is more than just a place to eat and drink—it’s a living piece of local history. Marine was founded in 1839 as Marine Mills, home to the first commercial sawmill on the St. Croix River. Nearly a hundred years later, in 1930, Brookside began its journey as a creamery before transforming into a beloved bar in 1939.
For generations, Brookside has been a cornerstone of the community, a gathering place where stories are shared over great food, cold drinks, and warm company. But while our roots run deep, we continue to grow with the times—expanding our menu with bold new flavors, crafting creative cocktails, and hosting a variety of events that bring people together. From seasonal specials and bingo nights to our famous live music and holiday markets, and even tie dye parties - there's always something happening at the Brookside.
Whether you're a Marine local or just passing through the St. Croix River Valley, there's always a seat for you at Brookside—where history meets community, and good times are always on the menu.

ROSS (Business Operations) - "One step into Brookside and you'll feel like you've been transported to a bar of your very own, surrounded by all of your friends, great food, and favorite libations. There's no place quite like it!"
JEREMY (Marketing) - “Whether you’re in town, just outside Marine, or simply passing through, Brookside is nothing but smiles, laughs, and a good time. It’s what got me hooked since moving to Marine. And I’m happy to be a part of that.”
GRAYSON (Back of House) - “The Brookside has been a part of my life for so many years. It’s something truly special to me, to everyone in our community, and to those lucky enough to visit. And I want to continue that.”
ROSIE (Front of House) - “I came to Marine on St. Croix 13 years—an abused and bent woman. A mother with five children—fleeing an abusive relationship. I came with nothing but a hope and a dream of a better life. To make a good life and home for my babies. A proud Dakota woman, I didn’t even realize at that time, that I indeed had come home.
The community of Marine took us in—held us tight to her bosom. Through great acts of kindness from strangers back then, family now, this community taught me just what that word means. Community is defined as, ‘A social group of any size whose members reside in a specific locality, share government, and often have a common cultural and historical heritage.’ This definition fails to encompass what Marine has taught us about that word. It’s so much more than this vague representation of the true nature of humankind. Our governments, cultural, and historical heritages in today’s societal climate can at times be used as divisive tools. Ways in which we separate ourselves from one another.
If Marine was a place that stuck to text book definitions, my kids and I wouldn’t be here today. It is a melting pot of Love. A place to commune and converse regardless of these things. Especially, at the Brookside.
Before becoming an owner of the beloved Brookside Bar and Grill, I bartended here for nearly 5 years. Connecting to the spirits of those I serve. And my God, I have fallen madly, deeply in love with you.
It is my personal mission statement—my promise to you all—with a humble heart full of gratitude, love, and humility—and with that of your continued patience and support, because we all know what a stubborn woman I can be at times, haha—this family will build a legacy here. We will be together for generations to come. love you.”
